7 killed as fourth phase of
panchayat poll begins in Bihar

Seven persons, including a mukhiya candidate were killed and 11 injured as violence once again marred the fourth phase of polling in Bihar's 1472 panchayats, spread over 83 blocks, where about 45 per cent votes were cast till 1300 hours IST, official sources said.

Inspector general of police (operation) Neelmani told PTI that a candidate for the post of mukhiya of Saraikala panchayat, Nagendra Singh was killed when two groups clashed with bows and arrows at a booth near Kumarkhand in Mahdepura district.

Another person was killed in crossfiring between twogroups at Rajaura in Sheikhpura district, while yet another died in a clash between miscreants near a polling centre at Khaira in Jamui district, he said.

According to a report from Bhojpur, a relative of a candidate for mukhiya of Jayghat panchayat was killed in an exchange of fire between two groups at Semra booth in Buxar district.

Reports reaching the state headquarters in Patna said two persons were killed and six others injured in an explosion when they were making bombs to rig poll at Nagma in Darbhanga district. In another related incident, two persons were injured when crude bombs went off in Sitamarhi district, reports said.

Neelmani said, a person was killed in an armed clash at a booth at Masrakh in Saran district.

Neelmani said, three persons were seriously injured when police opened fire to quell a mob trying to capture booths at Bhagwanpur in Saharsa district.

Around 48 persons have been killed in the first three phases of the panchayat polls held on April 11, 15 and 19 in the state, being held after 23 years.
