8 killed in third phase of
Bihar panchayat poll

Eight persons were killed and over 12 injured in a series of violent incidents, including police firing, bomb explosions, shootouts and clashes, till noon in the third phase of polling in 1569 panchayats in Bihar on Thursday.

According to official sources, while Muzaffarpur accounted for four deaths, two persons died in police firing in Siwan, and one each in Samastipur and Chapra.

In Muzaffarpur, three persons were killed on the spot while two others injured at Madhopur village when they were manufacturing bombs to create disturbances during the poll.

The injured included a candidate for mukhia (panchayat president) Krishna Sahni.

In another incident in Muzaffarpur, one person was killed and two others injured in a clash between two rival groups near a booth under Motipur police station.

Sources said two persons were killed when police opened fire to quell a crowd trying to capture booths at Barauli in Siwan district.

Four persons were injured in the firing and subsequent clashes, the sources said.

A Chapra report, quoting official sources, said one person was killed and two others injured in exchange of fire between two rival groups at Manohar Basantpur village. The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital. In another poll-related incident, one Dilip Pande was killed in a bomb explosion in Saranpur, the sources said.

Three persons were seriously injured when police fired at booth grabbers at Saini Tola under Simri Bakhtiarpur block in Saharsa district, police sources said.

According to state election office in Patna, an estimated 30 to 35% voters exercised their franchise till 1230 hrs.

Reports of tearing of ballots, and other electoral malpractices continued to pour in from various panchayats in Bihar.

Over 30 people have been killed in widespread violence that took place during first and second phase of polling on April 11 and 15.
