Violence in Bihar panchayat elections
claims 20 lives

With the death of seven people in police firing in Kurhni block of Muzaffarpur district in Bihar, the death toll in Wednesday's panchayat poll has reached 20. Two of those killed were women.

However, official sources put the toll at eight with the toll in Muzaffarpur at two.

The police resorted to firing when a mob, which gheraoed the police station following the arrest of a candidate, turned violent.

In another incident, three Jain tourists were killed in a land mine blast reportedly triggered by the ultra-left Peoples War Group in Kawakole block of Nawada district. Extremist outfits had given a call to boycott the election.

Violence has been reported from most of the 37 districts with Patna and Vaishali with three deaths each topping the list.

In Siwan two persons, including a candidate, were killed. One person each was killed in Darbhanga, Madhubani, Nalanda and Sheikhpura districts. In the last named, the daughter of a candidate was killed in a shoot-out.

Another girl was killed in Patna.

Women were beaten up by hooligans in Munger, Vaishali and Madhubani districts.
