At least a ten people have been reported killed and as many injured in Bihar where polling for the first phase of panchayat elections took place on Wednesday.
(A PTI report put the death toll at 17. The violence, it said, quoting official sources, claimed four lives in Nawada, two each in in Siwan, Muzaffarpur and Patna, and one each in Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Shekhpura, Nalanda, Vaishali and Gaya. Unofficial sources put the toll at 22.)
Four people, including a girl, were killed in shootouts at three different places in Patna, while two persons, including a candidate Munna Tiwary, died in an exchange of fire in Panchrukhi block in Siwan district.
Reports of one death each in Nalanda, Jehanabad and Madhubani districts have also reached the state police headquarters.
Three persons were critically injured in a violent clash between the supporters of two groups in Raghopur under Vaishali district. All of them have been rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital in critical condition. One of the injured is the father of Dilip Singh, a candidate for the post of mukhiya.
In Nalanda district, the administration has given orders to arrest Krishen Deo Singh, a candidate for the post of mukhiya.
Meanwhile, the central election office in Patna said 40 per cent of the electorate had cast its vote till afternoon.
