Question: Hi Mohandas, How is it that a stumping is differentiated from a run-out if the keeper picks up the ball and throws the stumps down?

I remember a case when Nayan Mongia did that and the dismissal was awarded a 'RUN OUT' whereas in the case of Rahul Dravid (against Sri Lanka) it was declared 'Stumped'. Is there any rule regarding this?

Answer3: A stumping is effected when a batsmen is out of his crease while attempting to play at a delivery, while a batsman is dismissed run-out only when he is attempting a run. However, it is finally left to the umpires to decide on the mode of dismissal - as in the case of Rahul Dravid's stumping of Chamara Silva's at Bristol, while attempting a run.
