"Today ceremony fulfills the president's (Bush) March 2006 promise to open a new consulate in this historic and important city", Mulford said. Ruling out the possibility of the US setting any more consulate in any Indian city, he said, "At the moment, it is Hyderabad and you are very special today".
He pointed out that the US embassy in New Delhi was the latest to be opened after India's capital was moved from Kolkata during the British Raj. The US consulate in Kolkatta was opened in 1789 and Chennai and Mumbai consulates were opened some time during the 18th century.
Now US was moving its consulate in Mumbai to a new facility at the cost of $80 million, Mulford said.
