Cauvery dispute resurfaces

April 04, 2008
With Karnataka assembly elections only a couple of months away, the Cauvery dispute has resurfaced, as politicians want to cash in on the issue, specially in the southern part of the state. The argument being put forth by politicians and activists is that the Cuavery river is the source of Hogenakkal, and since the water sharing is still a subject matter of litigation among the two states, Tamil Nadu should not go ahead with the Rs 1,340 crore Drinking Water Project.

Tamil Nadu points out that the water for the project would be collected from the part of the river already allocated to it by the Cauvery Waters' Tribunal.

Tamil Nadu claims that the water that has gone downstream is of no use to Karnataka. Only 1.38 thousand million cubic metres of water is being used for the project annually, which will eventually supply water to 30 lakh people residing in the 17 towns and 1,755 villages of both Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts in Tamil Nadu.

This water is not utilised by Karnataka and hence it should make no difference to the state, Tamil Nadu argues.
