The other boys in blue

September 27, 2007
When five thousand supremely driven people decide to rally against a steel fence, it gives way.

The Indian team descended from the stage to take a victory lap, but being who we are, a solid chunk of hangers-on eclipsed the team, making it pretty much impossible to see the team itself. A closer look than, the crowd thunk. And careened through the perimeter fences, spilling all over the ground.

The pristine pitch was now the location of muddy cartwheels. In true Italian style, the people conquered Wankhede drowning out every authority figure -- including the players. Dhoni and his boys gamely completed the lap before they escaped, but it took a while as the partying crowd now played to the cameras. The lathis were inevitable, and a few mediapeople got smacked in the bargain, even as several hundred people lost their slippers.

I'm told its going to be impossible to ready the outfield in time for the 7th India-Australia ODI here on October 17. I'd rather picture Matthew Hayden trying to grab a skyer and tripping over a rubber chappal.
