Since the storyline was likely not familiar to a majority of her audience, Ratnam used the ploy of having children narrate the tale of Rama and Sita, and the titanic battle with Ravana.
Having established the plotline in the minds of her audience, she then headed a troupe of over a dozen dancers in rendering the timeless tale though a fusion of the various dance forms she is adept in.
