Ratnam first came on-stage wearing a mask of Ganesh; a ploy, she said, to strike a rapport with her cross-cultural audience.
"You see, almost everybody knows Ganesh; even Americans can connect with him. So it has a cross-over appeal," the danseuse who has made a career of bringing to India's traditional dance forms an eclectic worldview, said.
"Also, the image of Ganesh brings smiles to young people's faces, because he is so lovable and non-threatening."
