Ratnam's mastery of traditional art forms ranges from Bharata Natyam, through Mohini Attam and Kathakali.
Ratnam did her Master's in theatre and television from the University of New Orleans, and for the next ten years worked as a television producer in the US, going on to earn several nominations for the Emmy and Ace awards.
She then returned home to play an activist role in the propagation of performing arts, founding the Arangham Trust for that purpose. Her work has earned her awards ranging from the Nrityakala Shiromani, Lalithakala Ratna, Natya Ratna and Bharatha Kala Rathinam.
