Where Ganapati is more than a god

Azad Hind Mitra Mandal, Natraj Chowk, Deccan Gymkhana

Established: 1942

Three local lads, Antre, Dhighe and Paigude, started the festival here, inspired by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The mandal owns two temples and undertakes various social welfare activities as well. For the last 23 years, the idol has remained the same. The organisers say they stopped immersing the idol to prevent water pollution. Ganesh sports about 20 kg silver ornaments here, all of it donated by devotees. Festivities here are marked by a shobhayatra (procession) on the first day and Satya Naryan Puja just before the immersion. Use of gulal (colour) and Hindi songs are strictly prohibited. This year, the theme of the decoration is Lord Hanuman's mission to Lanka.
