Where Ganapati is more than a god

Shivaji Nagar Sarvjanik Ganeshotsav Mandal

Established: 1950

Established by Pandurang Nagarkar, bhajans and kirtans were a hallmark of the Shivaji nagar Ganeshotsav. "But now, times have changed and people don't want to listen to all that," says one of the organisers.

The theme this year is Lord Krishna and his romantic adventures.

Here too, the main idol remains the same and a small, substitute idol is immersed.

The organisers say the festival cuts across all barriers. "When we started this festival, an Iranian who use to stay here. Every year he would bring his Ganapati also and keep it in our pandal. There was so much unity between us. But then, he left Pune and settled in Iran."

The Shivaji nagar Ganesh sports 10 kg silver ornaments.
