Majestically atop his horse, Lieutenant Rohit Dagar almost got a bird's eye view of the parade. But in his uniform, leading the cavalry unit, his concentration was on leading the formation of the horse-mounted soldiers of the 61 Cavalry through Rajpath. Nothing else mattered.

"61 Cavalry is part of military folklore," he said, "and is believed to have successfully carried the last cavalry charge in history."

A former junior national champion in show jumping and equestrian, Dagar is reaffirming yet another military tradition. He is a second-generation officer who was watched by his entire family at the parade.
