On January 26, 1950, the people of the ancient land of India finally emerged from the shadow of monarchs and autocrats and took charge of their own destiny.
India was at last a Republic.
As India observed the 54th anniversary of this epochal event, rediff.com met some of the people who set up the grand celebration that was the Republic Day parade 2004.
