'We are cut off from the rest of Delhi for over 12 hours'
Deepak Roy, winner of the President's Award for documentary filmmaking and a resident near India Gate

Deepak Roy (right)
Every year my wife Rita Shah and I are cut off from the rest of Delhi for over 12 hours when the security forces virtually take over all the buildings overlooking Rajpath and those falling on the parade route.

(Though he takes great pride to be an Indian and its democracy, he wonders what purpose the parade serves for the present generation.)

I feel pity for those who have to rehearse every day in the blistering cold and thick fog for the parade.

But these are my ideas and need not be taken literally by those who feel enthusiastic about having a parade every year.

As told to Onkar Singh
