Lord Meghnad Jagdish Chandra Desai is one of the most eminent economists of our times. For long a critic of India's economic policies, Desai is one of the believers in the potential of India.
According to Desai in the last two years, India has made a significant turnaround and is on its way to 8 per cent GDP growth. However, he says the rising fiscal deficit and the bloating bureaucracy remain areas of concern.
A graduate from University of Mumbai, Desai received his doctorate from University of Pennsylvania. He was formerly the Director of the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics and has lectured at the School extensively.
Desai was made a member of the House of Lords in 1991 and prefers to be now addressed as Lord Desai.
