The third day is Balipratipada or Bali Padyami. On this day legend has it King Bali emerges from Pathala Loka (the netherworld) and rules Bhuloka (Earth) thanks to a boon from Lord Vishnu.

Many Hindus celebrate this day as the beginning of a new year by wearing new clothes, jewellery and visiting relatives. Among the business community of Western India this day is considered the start of the new financial year.

Intricate patterns or designs made out of coloured powder commonly known as rangolis are seen outside homes. Even readymade design patterns are bought before Diwali.
