The second day of Diwali is Lakshmi Puja. Goddess Lakshmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu and the goddess of wealth.

Diwali is considered the last day of the financial year by traditional Hindu businesses. Businessmen perform Chopda Pujan on this day and open the new books of accounts.

It is believed that those who worship Goddess Lakshmi on this day are bestowed with riches. People perform puja on small Lakshmi idols or coins on this day.

Another interesting custom is gambling. It is believed that Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva on this day and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. This tradition of gambling continues to this day.

People buy gold or silver idols or coins (5, 10 or 15 grams) engraved with Goddess Lakshmi's image.
