Dhanotraydashi or Dhanteras precedes Diwali and is dedicated to wealth. It is an important day for the gold markets and many Hindus buy gold on this day.

Dhanteras and its twinkling lights set the mood for Diwali and many finish their shopping during the day. By evening, the first lamp of Diwali is lit.

Diwali is also traced back to Naraka, son of Bhoodevi, who after acquiring powers from Lord Brahma unleashed a reign of terror in Kamarupa. According to legend only his mother could kill Naraka. So Lord Krishna asks his wife Satyabhama, the reincarnation of Bhoodevi, to be his charioteer in the battle with Naraka, who is then killed.

Naraka Chaturdasi begins with a fragrant oil bath at dawn, followed by a hearty meal of sweets and namkeens.

Gone are days when families made paper lanterns at home. Seen here are lanterns made out of plastic and paper. They come in all shapes and sizes.
