She was accused of highlighting destitution in Kolkata. Some said it was coercing conversion from the defenceless.

The strongest attack against her came in 1994, when Christopher Hitchens and Tariq Ali wrote the scathing Channel 4 documentary 'Hell's Angel: Mother Teresa of Calcutta.' Hitchens viewed Teresa's organisation as a cult that promotes suffering and does not help those in need.

He also accused her of taking donations without questioning the sources. In his book he mentioned that former missionary workers and visiting doctors consistently observe that the order's medical practices seem so inadequate, especially given all the money that comes in.

Her words: "No matter who says what, you should accept it with a smile and do your own work."
