Mother Teresa and her missionaries have spread their work in India and beyond. The Missionaries of Charity devote their time to the blind, the disabled, the aged, and the poor. Mother Teresa opened schools, orphanages and homes for the needy, and turned her attention to the victims of AIDS, as its prevalence grew. By 1996, she was operating 517 missions in more than 100 countries.

While working on several such projects, she had to face her detractors.

Her words: "In the West there is loneliness, which I call the leprosy of the West. In many ways it is worse than our poor in Calcutta."
