You have Akashdeep Saigal, a Hindi serial artist as the villain in the film. Why did you choose him?
We wanted a north Indian actor for the role because the film is set in Sowcarpet in Chennai where there are more north Indians like Gujaratis, Marwaris, Sindhis than Tamilians. All of them speak Tamil very well. The rickshaw pullers in that area also speak Gujarati. I grew up there. That is Madras 1 (600 001).
Why didn't you name the film Chennai 1?
Venkat Prabhu already made a film called Chennai 28!.
Is Sowcarpet also a character in the film?
Yes, in a way. Their Tamil is also different from the Tamil you hear in the other parts of Chennai. We shot the entire film on real locations; we didn't recreate any sets. We shot with local people.
