National award-winning cinematographer K V Anand's [see inset]second directorial venture Ayan, with Suriya and Tamannah in the lead, is the hottest summer release of 2009 in Tamil.
His first film, Kana Kandein was appreciated by both critics and the public.
In this interview to Shobha Warrier, KV Anand talks about his film and much more.
How different is Ayan going to be from Kana Kandein?
There is a lot of difference between the two films. Kana Kandein was basically between three people, played by Prithviraj, Srikanth and Gopika.
It was a low budget film with new young artists. I made the film in Rs two crore and 40 lakh though the budget I got was two-fifty. It was sold for Rs 4 crore. I also made the film within the stipulated time. Because it was made on that budget, it made a profit. It broke the myth that cinematographers-turned-directors concentrate more on visuals and less on stories. My stress was on the story and screenplay.
Compared to Kana Kandein, Ayan is a big budget film. You can't make films that reach both an NRI and a rickshaw puller. A script like Kana Kandein catered only to the educated section of the people whereas the script of Ayan will reach a wider audience. It is more commercial too.
When Subha and I sat down to write the script, we decided that however commercial the film was going to be, there should be logic in the story.
