Like the title of the film goes; Provoked is inspired by the real-life trauma of London-based Kiranjit Ahluwalia [played by Ash].

Unable to deal with the relentless cruelty -- emotional, physical, sexual, at the hands of her husband, she sets him on fire. The extremity of her actions earns a new objectivity after a non-profitable organisation decides to review her case in court resulting in a historical breakthrough.

Besides the obvious lack of glamour, Aishwarya instilled a sense of fragility, dignity and sympathy to her endlessly tormented Kiranjit, allowing her dynamic blue-green eyes to convey most of her character's poignancy.
