But not all unions are destined for a fairy-tale realisation after domestic abuse creeps into a relationship. It is an unfortunate reality that has yet to meet its end.

Over the years, a handful of filmmakers have depicted the plight of victims of this disturbing scenario through powerfully-told characters.

Preity Zinta, Videsh

Rechristened Videsh for the Indian audience, Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth revolves around a Ludhiana girl Chand, played by Preity Zinta. Post-marriage, Chand shifts to Canada only to find herself at the receiving end of her frustrated husband's violence.

Well-received at various film festivals, Videsh is an unusual offering from the actress synonymous with all things 'bubbly.' Interestingly, this film, along with The Last Lear and Jahnu Barua's unreleased Har Pal complete Priety's hat-trick in meaningful cinema.
