Whether it's the aroma of zesty North Indian cuisine greeting the congested lanes of Paranthawali Gali, lingering nostalgia of Mirza Ghalib's revered haveli or the renowned salesmanship of merchants retailing splendid zardozi and benarasis at the famous Kinari bazaar, there is tons to discover in the chaotic yet celebrated neighbourhood of Old Delhi's ever-throbbing Chandni Chowk.

Not so surprisingly then, its colourful character, intriguing paradoxes and upbeat inhabitants have become a hub of inspiration for several filmmakers in recent times.

rediff.com takes a trip down Chandni Chowk's bustling streets through the eyes of Bollywood:

Chandni Chowk To China

Thanks to his latest action comedy set to hit the screens on January 16, Akshay Kumar traced his Chandni Chowk roots, namely Paranthawali Gali, where he briefly lived as a young boy. Even as the current sensation cannot stop gushing about its 72 different types of parathas, the caper features him as a bungling cook from Chandni Chowk and his subsequent adventure-packed vacation to China.
