Top directors of Southern Cinema, 2008

Madhupal
Film: Thalappavu

Actor Madhupal took over the mantle of a director with remarkable ease. Malayalam film, Thalappavu narrated the story of a police constable, who lived his entire life in distress after he was made to shoot a Naxalite leader to death.

Thalappavu was inspired from the real-life killing of Naxalite leader Varghese in the 1970s, which made headlines years later, when a cop announced that he had shot the revolutionary dead at the behest of his superiors.

Lal played the cop in a restrained manner, while Prithviraj played the Naxalite leader.

With Thalappavu, Madhupal proved that he was more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it.
