Based on the life of writer Nandanar, M G Sasi's Malayalam film, Adayalangal, recreated a different era on screen. The story focused on the life of a poor villager named Gopi, who lived with his family.

Gopi was young and his hunger was not limited to food alone. Only his beautiful neighbour Meenakshikkutty understood him, and persuaded him to join the army.

Sasi handled his debut venture with the expertise of a seasoned director.
