I was called for the Slumdog audition but I couldn't make it. On the last day of the auditions, I managed to check with the production team. I was the last one to audition. I got selected after three auditions," Tanay reveals.
Like his previous directors, Tanay is all praise for Danny Boyle as well. "Danny is not from Mumbai but he showed the city and its spirit so well in his film. I would always observe him. One day, he was talking to a slum kid, who did not know English. I went to help him out but he said he would take care. He spoke to the child in English for so long, and the child understood it all without a translator," he says.
Tanay may be only 12 but he understands Jamal's romance with Latika. "I have seen many romantic movies so I understand it. But I have never been in love," he says. "During the scene where Salim pushes Jamal out of the room in that deserted hotel, and takes Latika inside, I was so angry that I felt like killing Ashutosh. But then this is what acting is about," Tanay says.
The scene where Jamal and Salim are required to jump from a moving train was one of the most difficult ones. But quite a few precautions were taken. "When we jump off the train and start rolling, we were actually inside a barrel and the camera was on our foreheads to catch our expressions. Once the scene was done, they used technology to remove the barrel," he says.
