After giving us numerous serious films Shyam Benegal brings us his new comedy titled Welcome To Sajjanpur starring Shreyas Talpade, Amrita Rao, Ila Arun, Divya Dutta and Ravi Kissen.
Patcy N got a chance to speak to Shreyas who plays the only literate character in the movie. Read on as the actor tells us about his experience of working with Benegal and his forthcoming films.
What is Welcome to Sajjanpur about?
It is a satirical comedy about a village called Sajjanpur where everybody is illiterate except for one guy. It is a humorous movie but not preachy at all. It is also a love story between a boy and his childhood friend.
I play Mahadev, the only educated person in the village. He goes to a neighbouring town to finish his education. After his graduation, he returns to the village to write a novel. But his dream of writing is shortlived and he ends up writing letters for villagers. In the process of writing the letters, he becomes very famous, as people whose works are stalled get done.
One day, his childhood friend (Amrita) comes to him for a letter. He adds his own emotions in the letters and manipulates them a bit. You can say that I have grey shades in the movie.
Is it a satirical comedy like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron?
No. We are not taking on the system here. This is a joy ride where every character is a namuna, a funny character.
