Holi, the popular festival of colour, means different things to different people. For some, it is a time when they can have lots of fun; for others, it brings back bittersweet memories. And nowhere is this more apparent than on the big screen.
Bollywood has portrayed Holi in many colours. So the festival could showcase a happy moment in the film, or bring in a sense of terror. We take a look at five shades in which Hindi cinema has painted Holi.
Sholay
The Holi song starts joyously, but ends bringing a sense of terror to Ramgad village in Ramesh Sippy's classic, Sholay.
Dreaded dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) decides to teach the villagers a lesson after two bravehearts Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra) send his men packing during a routine extortion.
Smarting from the humiliation and irked by the villagers' jubilation, Gabbar chooses Holi to launch his attack, knowing fully well that the villagers would be in a celebratory mood.
