What Sarkar Raj means to Amitabh Bachchan

Sarkar Raj sees the Bachchan family, including Amitabh, Ashishek and Aishwarya, coming together for the first time. Amitabh Bachchan talks to Girish Rao about the film, its director Ram Gopal Varma, and his definition of Sarkar. Excerpts:

What does Sarkar mean to you?

In our Indian tradition and culture, people who are elder to us or those whom we respect are referred to as Sarkar. For that matter, people who have power in hand are also referred to as Sarkar.

What sort of Sarkar do you believe in?

I think that if someone has achieved something and he or she has affected my life in some way and has really impressed me, then he or she is Sarkar for me.

In this film, Sarkar Raj is the eldest man of the family. He is a very powerful figure and what happens around him is the story of Sarkar Raj. I have had many conversations with Ram Gopal Varma in the past, and he was thinking about what should be the core of this film.

I told him that the inside story of a family -- related to business, politics or the film fraternity -- is always bewitching and something should be done in this regard. We talked about it and this caught Ramu's fancy.
