Bringing back the serious to Malayalam cinema

Internationally well known director Shaji N Karun (inset) has so far directed only four feature films; Piravi, Swahm, Vaanaprastham and Nishad (Hindi). Though Nishad made in 2002 went unnoticed, people still talk about his master piece Vaanaprastham, which gave Mohanlal his third national award.

All the three Malayalam films of his were screened at the prestigious Cannes film festival. His debut film Piravi won the La Camera d'Or -- Mention d'honneur at Cannes. His second film Swaham was selected for the competitive section at Cannes, the only Indian film to receive the honour. Vaanaprasthamtoo was selected to be shown at the Cannes film festival.

After announcing several interesting projects (one of which was on the life of Raja Ravi Varma in Hindi), he has now decided to direct a Malayalam movie with Mammootty in the lead. The film is titled Kutty Sranku.

The film has started rolling amidst high expectations. With the lethal combination of director Shaji N Karun and Mammootty teaming up for this Reliance Big Entertainment production, the project has already hogged the limelight big time.
