'I was always attracted to Ibsen's plays'

What prompted you to make a film based on a play that was first published in the 19th century?

There are certain points when people go back to the classics. It has happened with Ulysses and perhaps we experienced it with M T Vasudevan Nair's Randamoozham (based on The Mahabharata with Bheema as the protagonist) in Malayalam.

I was always attracted to Ibsen's plays. For me, The Master Builder has a perfect structure. The characters in the play are perhaps related to the playwright's life as well. The life of an ambitious man was inspiring enough to be made into a film.

The story has huge relevance still though it was written more than a century ago. Ibsen's character may not have been a well qualified architect or he would have been more like a self taught expert. As a filmmaker it is only natural to come out with a film that defies time.
