Sankranti releases, 2007

It's time for the big Telugu releases. Sankranti (Pongal) sees the year's blockbusters vying for audiences, and 2007 sees 4 films releasing between January 10 and 14. Last year, Devadasu, Style and Lakshmee were winners while Chukkalo Chandrudu managed an average run. Here's a look at this year's lineup:

Yogi

Yogi is the Telugu remake of the Kannada Jogi. After brother-sister bonding, this film brings the mother-son relationship to the fore. The film is directed by VV Vinayak and produced by P Ravindranath Reddy (the mayor of Kadapa) among others. Prabhas essays two characters, a naive villager and an urban guy. Sarada plays the mother and the heroine Nayantara is a journalist.

Well, the story seems familiar -- the innocent villager going to the city to work, getting lost in the mire, and then being sought out by the morther. Guru Kiran's music was one of Jogi's strongest points. Can Ramana Gogula do the same? Guru Kiran has done the background score. Is it said that Shivaraj Kumar is brilliant and that Nayantara has scorched the screen in a song shot in Egypt.

Vinayak's Lakshmee topped the charts last year. Prabhas has put the disastrous Pournami behind him but can he make this film work? Let's wait till Yogi releases on January 10.
