Pachaikili Muthucharam: The most eagerly awaited Tamil film of 2007!

Does that make you all the more tense?

It is true that the expectations are very high. That is the problem I am facing with Pachaikili Muthucharam. I want people to come and watch the film without any expectations. It is not big like Vettayadu in its format; it’s a very subtle and quiet film. I want to show that I can handle human emotions well.

In all my earlier films, it had always been just touch and go as far emotions are concerned. They were all in the genre of action thrillers where technique was given more importance. But in this film, the stress is on human emotions--between a husband and wife, between a man and a woman outside marriage. I think I have handled that issue very well.

Was it intentional on your part to make a film that is totally different from Kakha Kaakha and Vettayadu?

Yes. When I read the book Derailed by James Seigel, I was totally inspired. Please note it is not the film but the book that inspired me. I only took the idea from the book, Indianised it and then wrote the script. The book doesn’t open and end like my film.

Do you feel the audience will be surprised to see a film like Pachaikili from you?

Yes, Pachaikili is different from my earlier films. Ii is soft, quiet and restrained in the first half followed by a totally different second half. I hope they will not be put off by the first half, which is very slow.
