But don't you think filmmakers should surprise the audience instead of sticking to a particular genre all the time?
You are right. A filmmaker should surprise the audience. I think this film of mine will surprise the audience because it is totally different from Vettayadu and Kaakha Kaakha. I hope it will surprise them positively.
How different was it for you as a filmmaker making a film that explored human emotions?
I have grown as a filmmaker with this film in terms of portraying emotions and handling the actors. I made Jo (Jyothika) do something drastically different. I made Andrea very subtle. Sharath has not done something like this before. I have given a totally different look to the film.
Unlike Vettayadu, there are only 3-4 characters in the film. People may think it is claustrophobic but that's the idea.
I have delved into many issues that I have never touched before like the family, the relationship between husband and wife, and extra-marital affairs.
After writing the scripts of action films, was it difficult for you to write about human relationships?
I enjoyed writing the script. Actually I wrote the script with Kamal in mind. But then I thought it was too soft a character for Kamal and that goes for Sharath as well because both have a larger than life image. Actually I needed an actor who didn't have any star image. But Sharath very magnanimously agreed to do the film.
This film is not Sharath Kumar's film; it is a film about an ordinary guy who makes mistakes in his life.
In Tamil, not many filmmakers depict intimate moments between a man and a woman like the way Mani Ratnam did.
