An evening with the Bachchans

The poets were not afraid of public opinions and the efforts to silence the truth for they were the guardians of unholy secrets and they would carry through their writings the warning against communalism, greed, racism and extreme nationalism.

The inspiration for another poem came when some friends had taken him to a dance while he was at Cambridge. Amidst the drinking and dancing, Dr Bachchan also saw a statute of Buddha which prompted him to write a poem, Buddha Aur Nachgar.

The poem is about how Buddha was a non-believer but his followers made him into God, and how Buddha shaved his head but the disciples made sure that the statues showed the man with some hair.

Buddha had preached renunciation but the monks in many countries including China, Sri Lanka and Korea, turned him into a deity, and placed him in ornate temples.

Buddha eschewed luxuries of life but some people would have his statue in a club that served meat and alcohol.
