The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)
The maker: Rajkumar Santoshi
The man playing Gandhi: Surendra Rajan
Unlike most other filmmakers, Rajkumar Santoshi chose to be rather critical of the Mahatma.
To highlight his hero Bhagat Singh's martyrdom, Santoshi paints Gandhi as a weak leader. Rajan's feeble delivery doesn't help either.
Similarly, films based on other historical figures who differed with Gandhi, like Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, portray Bapu (played by Surendra Rajan and Mohan Gokhale in the movies on Savarkar and Ambedkar, respectively) and his views in a not-so-complimentary light.
