Sunidhi: Gulzar uncle, tell us how do you begin your day?
Gulzar: My day begins at 5.30 or 6.30 am. I start by playing tennis for two hours. But I had to miss it today to be with you. I believe in the age-old saying, 'Early to bed makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise.
Though I admit my habit of sleeping early and getting up early has not made me any wiser. I am often asked when do I write. I tell them that I am a clerk who works on a strict discipline. I write everyday in the mornings as well as evenings. I am not talented. Whatever I have achieved is due to my hard work and discipline.
Sunidhi: Tell us about your passion to drive.
Gulzar (laughing): Yes, I like to drive people mad. (turns serious) I love to drive cars. I have driven up to Badrinath, up to the Burma border, and quite a few times to Kanyakumari.
Sunidhi: Any memorable experiences of driving?
Gulzar: During the making of my film Lekin, I had driven extensively. Once, I jokingly told Lataji (Mangeshkar) that the film should be attributed to me as written, directed and driven by Gulzar.
Another incident was when I was caught in a traffic jam in Mumbai. Panchamda was in a car next to mine, but there was another car in between us. So we asked the driver of the car in the middle to roll down the windows so that Panchamda and I could carry on a conversation!
