The film courted many controversies but still, went on to become one of the big hits of the year.
Aamir Khan took Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi head on and openly supported the villagers who were ousted from their villages because of the construction of Narmada dam.
This led to the film being off theatres in Gujarat, as theatre owners did not want to invite trouble.
A lot of the credit for the film's success could be the fact that it was Kajol's comeback opposite Aamir, a pair Bollywood had never seen before. And then again, it was produced by a certain Yash Raj Films.
