CBI opposes Verma's bail application

The CBI on Monday opposed the bail plea of B P Verma, the suspended chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs, saying he was a habitual bribe taker.

Verma is presently lodged in Tihar Jail alongwith his son Siddharth, conduit Bhawana Pandey, the managers of Siddharth's firms Rajiv Sharma, C Sarvan Kumar and K Vijay Pratap on charges of criminal conspiracy, bribery and abusing official position.

In his application filed before Special Judge R L Chugh on April 18, Verma had sought his release on bail saying he was suffering from various ailments including chronic obstructive lung disease and bronchial asthma.

He had claimed that his condition was still serious and he required facility of oxygen therapy to maintain oxygen saturation at every moment.

Verma had said he also required an attendant to look after him during his serious condition alongwith the nursing facilities, which are not available in the jail at every moment. He submitted he needed to be treated outside the jail in an appropriate hospital.

However, the arguments on his bail plea were adjourned for May 14. The court also extended the judicial remand of all the accused till that day.

On Tuesday the court would hear arguments on the bail applications of two other accused Rajiv Sharma and K Vijay Pratap.
