CBI grills Verma's son and business associateThe CBI on Sunday questioned Siddarth Verma, son of B P Verma, former chairman of the Central Board for Excise and Customs who is accused of receiving bribe for showing favours to a Madras-based export house, and his business associate, agency sources said in New Delhi.They said Siddarth Verma and his business associate Rohit Jain were brought to the CBI headquarters on Sunday evening where the sleuths of Anti-Corruption Branch were questioning them. CBI sources said Verma had not co-operated with the agency and evaded all questions. Verma was not available for his comments. The duo owned five companies, which included Jubilee Enterprises and Jubilee Medicare. The CBI alleged that the two were running various business in the garb of these companies, the sources said, adding so far it was found that B P Verma had also invested Rs two million in these companies. The premises of Verma were raided on Saturday after which the government put him on 'compulsory wait' and appointed Sukumar Shankar, a member of the CBEC as the new chairman of the Board. The CBI also made huge recovery of assets during the raid, which was completed late on Saturday night. The assets included Rs 2.4 million worth of investments in Unit Trust of India, jewellery worth Rs 2.4 million, Rs 140,000 in cash, $1500, household goods worth Rs 1.6 million besides a bank balance of Rs 700,000.
