In the footsteps of the stars

March 26, 2009
Bollywood has become not only a land of fantasies, but also one of fantasy locales. Whether it is skipping down the Swiss Alps, singing to your love; or singing Jai Ho in a slum, movies have exposed us to locations we would otherwise probably not think of visiting. A report by the Annals of Tourism Research concludes that the tourist inflow at a filming location of a successful movie increases by more than half over the next four years.

Here's a look at a few locations in India where some of the most popular films in recent years were shot.

Film: Slumdog Millionaire

It was in Dharavi, Asia's largest slum, where some the most spectacular scenes of Slumdog Millionnaire were shot -- including the riot scenes. The film magnificently captures the congested lanes of Dharavi, where a young Jamal and his sweetheart grow up.

Six important locations where the film was shot include Kumbharwada (the potters' colony) Dhobighat, leather smiths, the pipeline (Slumdog Millionaire's opening shot), the lanes of Dharavi and the Juhu Slums.
