In these times, quite a few companies are trying to make sure that they get the most out of their employees; they want people who are self-starters and have shown the ability to go beyond their mandate.
So, students could consider doing some kind of additional work, such as teaching or writing or working part-time for an NGO during weekends etc. Such jobs add to your diversity of experience and upgrade your skills, besides the possible monetary rewards that such work may bring.
This may also have another positive fall-out. It increases your social/employer network. After all, someone you have interacted with or met might later help you get a job or give you a good recommendation!
