Rather than putting all your eggs in one basket and specialising in one discipline, think of doing a dual specialisation, or some other course side-by-side. For example, if you were originally thinking of specialising only in finance, you can think of doing a 'minor' in marketing as well. It is better to diversify your skill set that makes you better prepared to grasp any opportunities that come your way.
This helps as even if one particular sector or industry is not doing well, you can start off your career in some other sector and later switch back later to your primary area of interest. It is better to not be 'over-specialised'.
An interesting point has been the change in the kind of jobs that people are obtaining within the same disciplines. For example, within finance itself, given the decline of investment banks, students are now considering other types of firms such as private equity and venture capital ones.
