Night camping on Mattupetty Hills
The bus started from Kalasipalya at about 7.30 pm on December 12. We stopped at Madiwala for dinner before setting out on Hosur road.
Near Hosur the bus took a right turn into a narrow road. I wondered why, for the road to Hosur and ahead was good enough.
Anyways, without giving much thought I went off to sleep at around 11 pm.
I woke up with a jolt around midnight on hearing some noise. An RTO officer, near Dharmapuri, had stopped the bus and upon enquiry we found out the travel agent had not paid the entry tax for the bus!
It was a shocker for me. How could a well known company like Kallada be so irresponsible!
The RTO officer did not relent to our pleas. We had to wait for the travel agency to send another bus from Bangalore.
By the time the other bus arrived it was already 5 am. My plans for day one at Munnar had gone for a toss!
Airfare for Rs 599 and less!
We boarded the other bus, which was in a pretty sorry state, and continued our journey. The bus stopped at a local dhaba near Karur where we had breakfast.
The bus took a very long route: Theni -- Karur -- Kumily -- Munnar, so they could fill seats enroute to Munnar! We traveled for about 600 km, while it is actually about 480 km from Bangalore to Munnar.
There is more. At Kattapana we had to board a tempo traveller to reach Munnar which is 95 km away.
It took us two and a half hours to reach Munnar riding through the Western Ghats.
