Maintain some form of decorum

June 26, 2008
Even if Bugs Bunny is your boss' profile picture, don't assume it's safe to get over-familiar online. In fact, it's strongly suggested that you only grant your boss and colleagues limited access to your social networking profile.

Why? Well, for one so that they don't discover you were actually at your niece's first birthday party last week when you called in sick (you can't escape it -- you've been 'tagged' in the photographs).

Moreover, your friends may put up an embarrassing post or two on your profile page in good fun, but your boss may not find it funny ("Did you see those photos of Atul with a stripper in his lap? I had such hopes of making him assistant manager...").

And last but not least, the head honcho at your organisation may not take kindly to being 'soccer-punched' by you, even if it is online -- consequently, you may find yourself 'soccer-punched' out of a job.

Says Ritika Verma, 21, a trainee journalist from Mumbai, ""One big problem, be it Orkut's scraps or Facebook's Wall-to-Wall, is lack of privacy. People think they can get away with anything and lots of them create social communities to defame their teachers, bosses and other figures of authority. They don't realise that there is something known as 'Cyber Law' and that you have to observe a certain protocol when using the Internet -- you'll get into a lot of trouble otherwise."
