'It sounds cliched, but dancing is really in our blood!'

August 19, 2008
Also interesting was the 'Lifts and Tricks' workshop taught by the desi duo of Sneha and Richard. Many of the participants, though trained in Salsa, found the lifts and tricks intimidating at first. By the session's end, however, they were comfortably tossing their partners to and fro with seemingly great ease.

Sneha, a pint-sized, petite girl of no more than 5 feet, commanded the crowded auditorium with great skill. She and Richard, Indians themselves, had no trouble connecting with the participants, getting them to open up and attempt some really difficult moves. "It sounds cliched," said Sneha. "But dancing is really in our blood! Indians are such natural dancers, and they're fast learners too. I've done workshops in other places around the globe, where people don't always learn so quickly."

Perhaps most impressive was the fact that Sneha was there at all. A while back, she suffered a broken foot in a serious auto accident, an injury that required surgery. But rather than feel sorry for herself, Sneha's thrown her energy into the organisation, management and instruction aspect of dance, in lieu of performing. Once she's given a clean chit by doctors -- which she expects in the next year -- she'll be back on the dance floor, representing India in international competitions.
